Artist Spotlight Interview

Background

The Ransom brothers are a southern rock band based in Austin, Texas.

Who are your band members (If any) and what do they play?

Sean McHargue (lead vocals, guitar, harmonica), Daniel “Sal” Solis (guitar, mandolin), Phil Eckhardt (bass) and Austin “Pop” Wilson (drums).

Who are you inspired by?

Willie Nelson, John Prine, Jason Isbell, Evan Felker, Whiskey Myers, Allman Brothers, and Tedeschi Trucks band.

What is your musicalhistory? (When did you first start playing music)

We met through Sal’s roommate and started jamming together every week. We played a couple gigs in College Station and started going to open mics around Austin. Eventually that led us to bigger shows at places like the Saxon Pub and Bucks Backyard.

What's the biggest problem you have had to overcome? Are there hidden meanings to

your music?

The biggest problem we’ve had to overcome is just navigating the music industry today. We’ve built everything up pretty much from scratch and we’re still figuring out how to grow our audience.

The biggest guiding principles for us have been to write meaningful lyrics, grow as musicians, and trust that the music will do what it’s supposed to. Sometimes there are themes in our songs that are best expressed with a euphemism. Sometimes we just come out and say exactly what we mean. Either way, we make it clear to the listener who we are and what we’re about.

If you could change anything about the industry what would it be?

We really wish the movers and shakers would stop rewarding poor songwriting. We like beer, trucks and summertime but unique stories need to come back in style.

What is one venue you dream of playing? What do you do for fun?

Moody Theater for ACL Live is pretty much what gets us out of bed.

We like camping, collecting vinyl records, watching college football, and all four of us are big whiskey connoisseurs.

Is there anything else you would like to add? Are you working on any new music?

Announcements...Ect.

We’re constantly writing and coming up with new ideas for how to evolve our sound. We’re planning to be back in the studio next year to release new music.
